Miss South Africa Pulls Out of Miss Universe, Prioritizing Health

Mia Le Roux, the reigning Miss South Africa 2024, has officially announced her decision to withdraw from the upcoming Miss Universe competition due to health concerns.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Miss South Africa Organisation, Le Roux shared her appreciation for the unwavering support from her fellow South Africans, describing her choice as “extremely difficult” but essential to prioritize her well-being.

“I am deeply thankful for the incredible support I’ve received from South Africans during my journey to Miss Universe,” she said. “This decision was not an easy one, as I understand the expectations and dreams so many have entrusted to me. However, I must prioritize my health and recovery, ensuring I can continue to serve my country wholeheartedly in the future,” she explained.

The Miss South Africa Organisation echoed its support, commending Le Roux’s strength and resilience during this challenging time. “Mia has demonstrated remarkable bravery and grace while navigating this difficult situation,” the organisation stated. “Her health remains our top priority, and we are committed to standing by her as she regains her strength and focus on recovery.”

Le Roux’s departure comes during a tumultuous year for the Miss South Africa pageant. Earlier, Chidimma Adetshina, a contestant with Nigerian and South African roots, withdrew from the competition following widespread backlash on social media concerning her nationality.

Adetshina, born in Soweto to a Nigerian father and a South African mother of Mozambican origin, faced scrutiny after the South African Home Affairs Ministry launched an investigation into allegations of identity fraud involving her mother. Amid the controversy, Adetshina was later invited to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, where she emerged victorious.

Following these events, Mia Le Roux, a descendant of Dutch settlers, known as Boers, was crowned Miss South Africa 2024.
