2027: Atiku, Obi, Makinde Move Closer To Opposition Alliance Against Tinubu

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, efforts to forge a stronger opposition alliance against President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid appear to be gathering momentum, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde among the political figures expected to play key roles.

The development follows consultations by the G100, a coalition of concerned Nigerians seeking to bring opposition political forces together ahead of the 2027 polls.

The group said it had concluded an initial round of consultations with leaders of several opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

According to the coalition, the discussions with party chairmen, presidential candidates and their running mates were constructive and focused on finding common ground for a broader political alliance.

A meeting involving Atiku, Obi, Makinde and other prominent opposition figures is expected to further advance discussions on how the opposition can work together ahead of the election.

The proposed alliance is aimed at preventing the opposition vote from being divided, a factor widely discussed following the outcome of the 2023 presidential election, when Tinubu, Atiku and Obi emerged as the leading candidates.

The latest development comes amid growing political realignment ahead of 2027, with opposition leaders and groups exploring different arrangements that could produce a formidable challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, the structure of any proposed alliance, including the choice of presidential candidate and the platform under which the opposition would contest, remains a subject of ongoing negotiations.

The coming weeks are therefore expected to be crucial as political stakeholders intensify consultations on the possibility of presenting a united opposition against Tinubu in 2027
