Balami Explains Decision To Leave Obi’s Camp, Return To APC

Former supporter of Peter Obi and aviation entrepreneur, Isaac Balami, has explained his decision to leave the Labour Party (LP) and return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying his move was based on political convictions and his assessment of Nigeria’s current political direction.

Balami, who played a prominent role in mobilising support for Obi during the 2023 presidential election, said his return to the APC was a personal political decision after reviewing developments within the opposition camp and the ruling party.

The former Obi ally explained that his political journey has always been driven by his desire to contribute to national development, adding that his decision was not motivated by personal benefits but by his belief in where he could make a greater impact.

Balami said he respected Peter Obi and acknowledged the role the former Anambra State governor played in inspiring many young Nigerians through the Obidient Movement. However, he noted that political choices change as circumstances evolve and individuals must make decisions based on their convictions.

According to him, his return to the APC was influenced by his belief that the party remains a platform where he can contribute meaningfully to governance and support policies aimed at improving the country.

His defection has attracted reactions from political observers, especially because of his previous role as a strong supporter of Obi during the 2023 presidential campaign. Many have described the move as another indication of the political realignments taking place ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Balami’s decision comes amid ongoing movements by politicians and political stakeholders across different parties as alliances continue to shift ahead of the next election cycle. Several politicians who previously supported opposition platforms have recently returned to or joined the ruling APC, citing various reasons including ideology, development agenda and political strategy.

Meanwhile, supporters of the Obidient Movement have continued to debate the implications of Balami’s departure, while APC members have welcomed his return as a boost to the party’s growing support base.

Political analysts say defections are common in Nigeria’s political environment, particularly as elections approach. They noted that the strength of any political movement will depend not only on individual personalities but also on its structures, policies and ability to connect with voters.

As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, more political realignments are expected as parties intensify efforts to expand their influence and attract support across the country.
