Osun 2026: EFCC Freezes State Government Account Days Before Governorship Poll

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly frozen one of the Osun State Government’s bank accounts less than two weeks before the state’s governorship election, a development that has intensified political tensions ahead of the August 15 poll. The affected account is said to be domiciled with First Bank and reportedly contains funds belonging to the state government.

The action came shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke alleged that the anti-graft agency was planning to freeze the state’s accounts as part of what he described as efforts to disrupt government activities before the election. The governor’s administration had earlier insisted there was no legal basis for such a move and warned that freezing government accounts could affect the delivery of essential public services.

According to reports, the account restriction has raised fresh concerns among political stakeholders, with opposition parties and civil society groups closely monitoring developments as the election approaches. The governorship contest is expected to be one of the most closely watched off-cycle elections in the country this year.

While the EFCC had not publicly explained the reasons for the action at the time of reporting, the commission is empowered to investigate financial crimes and may seek restrictions on accounts in the course of investigations, subject to applicable legal procedures. No official statement had confirmed whether the account freeze was directly connected to any ongoing investigation involving the Osun State Government.

Governor Adeleke’s administration has maintained that any attempt to freeze state government accounts so close to the election could hinder governance and create unnecessary political tension. State officials described the development as unfortunate and called on relevant authorities to ensure that democratic processes are not undermined.

The development follows weeks of heightened political activities in Osun State, where major political parties have intensified campaigns ahead of the governorship election. Security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have repeatedly appealed to political actors to conduct peaceful campaigns and avoid actions capable of disrupting the electoral process.

Political analysts say the latest development is likely to generate further debate over the role of law enforcement agencies during election periods. They stressed that while anti-corruption institutions have a responsibility to investigate alleged financial crimes, such actions should remain transparent and in accordance with due process to avoid perceptions of political interference.

Meanwhile, stakeholders have urged all parties involved to allow the rule of law to prevail and avoid inflammatory statements that could heighten tensions. They also called on the EFCC to provide clarification where necessary and on political leaders to respect democratic institutions as the state prepares for the crucial governorship election.

As Osun voters await the August 15 governorship poll, attention is expected to remain focused on developments surrounding the account freeze and any official responses from the EFCC, the state government and other relevant institutions. Observers say transparency and adherence to legal procedures will be essential to maintaining public confidence in both the electoral process and the administration of justice.
