Top political figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, are expected to grace the 2026 edition of the Southern Kaduna cultural celebration slated for May 28 to May 30 in Kafanchan, Kaduna State.
Details of the event were announced on Monday by the Southern Kaduna Leadership Council through a statement issued by the head of the festival’s planning committee, retired Rear Admiral Ferguson Bobai.
According to the organisers, Shettima is billed to attend the grand finale as the Special Guest of Honour, while Obasanjo is expected to participate in the programme as the Father of the Day. The statement also confirmed that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, alongside at least five state governors, would participate in the celebration as distinguished guests.
The annual event, which has continued to gain national attention, is designed to showcase the rich cultural identity of Southern Kaduna while encouraging peace, unity, and stronger relationships among the region’s many ethnic and religious communities.
Organisers explained that this year’s theme, “Embrace Diversity, Build Bridges,” reflects the determination of the people to encourage tolerance, mutual understanding, and peaceful interaction despite differences in culture, religion, and social background. They noted that the gathering would provide an avenue for dialogue and collaboration among residents and visitors from across the country.
Beyond cultural promotion, the festival is also expected to boost tourism and attract investors to the region. The planning committee stated that the programme would help stimulate economic activities, support local businesses, and improve the image of Southern Kaduna on the national stage.
Several activities have been outlined for the three-day programme. They include colourful cultural processions, traditional dance performances, exhibitions of local delicacies, displays of indigenous arts and crafts, intellectual discussions, and sporting contests. Sporting events expected during the festival include marathon competitions, archery, dambe contests, and badminton games.
The organisers highlighted the growth of the festival since its debut edition in 2023, which was organised under the theme “Experience Unity, Celebrate Culture.” They added that the 2024 edition centred on “Preserving Heritage, Igniting Progress,” attracting widespread participation and recognition.
According to the committee, previous editions welcomed influential personalities from different parts of the country, including Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, and Borno State Deputy Governor Umar Usman Kadafur.
The statement further revealed that outstanding indigenes of Southern Kaduna who have achieved success in various sectors, including public administration, business, education, security, and sports, would be recognised during the event. Honourees are expected to receive prestigious awards, among them the Southern Kaduna Grand Commander honour.
All festival activities will take place at the Kafanchan Township Stadium located in Jema’a Local Government Area. The organisers also appealed to government institutions, private organisations, development agencies, and individuals to support the programme to ensure a successful outing.
