The Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has indicated that opposition parties in Nigeria are prepared to form strategic partnerships as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.
In an interview with Punch, Baba-Ahmed explained that discussions around alliances are ongoing, with opposition groups focused on strengthening their chances of success at the polls. According to him, the willingness to collaborate will become more defined once there is greater clarity about the individuals and political actors involved in the emerging opposition structure.
He noted that the central aim shared across opposition parties is to unseat the current administration led by Bola Tinubu. Baba-Ahmed argued that many within the opposition believe a change in leadership is necessary, expressing concern about the country’s direction under the present government. He suggested that allowing the administration to continue for another term could have serious implications for Nigeria’s future.
Speaking further, Baba-Ahmed emphasized that opposition groups are keeping all their options open, including forming coalitions or contesting independently, depending on how the political landscape evolves. He explained that once the composition of key players becomes clearer, decisions will be made on whether to unite under a common platform or pursue separate strategies while maintaining a shared objective.
He stressed that whatever path is chosen, all actions will remain within the bounds of the law. According to him, opposition parties are committed to using legitimate and democratic means to achieve victory in the next election. This includes building stronger political structures, mobilizing support, and possibly entering into alliances that could improve their chances against the ruling party.
Baba-Ahmed also addressed concerns about the motivations behind the push for collaboration. He insisted that the effort to build a united opposition is not driven by personal ambition or the desire to occupy political offices. Instead, he framed it as a necessary step toward addressing the country’s challenges and improving governance.
He maintained that the overarching goal is to “rescue” Nigeria from its current situation, stressing that members of the opposition are serious about bringing about meaningful change. According to him, the focus is on ensuring that the country moves in a better direction, rather than simply replacing one set of leaders with another for personal gain.
Furthermore, Baba-Ahmed reiterated that the PRP and its potential partners are ready to engage in any form of collaboration that would strengthen the opposition’s position. He said such arrangements would be carefully considered to ensure they contribute effectively to the broader mission of achieving political change.
He concluded by reaffirming the determination of opposition forces to prevent the return of the current administration in the next election cycle. In his view, building a strong and united front remains the most viable path toward achieving that goal and setting Nigeria on a different course.
