Chief Tony Ezeagwu, the South-South Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), appeared at the Landslide News studio in Wuye, Abuja, today for an interview where he discussed the party’s future, recent political rumours, and its readiness for the upcoming 2027 general elections.
During the discussion, the host, Kingsley Okafor asked Chief Ezeagwu about the confusion among many Labour Party members who have political ambitions. The host said: “Before now, a lot of people who have the ambition to run in the Labour Party have been confused. Do they remain in Labour Party, or will Labour Party end up having… how will my name be submitted? Since Nenadi’s camp is coming from one corner. Abure is not legitimate. How do you get back those members of Labour that have gone to other places before now?”
In response, Chief Tony Ezeagwu said, “Most of them were just standing by the fence. Now they know that Labour Party is fully ready for 2027. Everybody will begin to come back now. There’s no two ways about it. All over Nigeria, people are sending messages to us telling us, ‘Congratulations! Nigeria now knows that Labour Party is ready for 2027.’”
Mr. Kingsley Okiemoya, a discussant, also asked, “INEC has ratified, but today we saw Dati Ahmed at the forum. We did not see Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last election. Any news from Obi?”
In response, Chief Tony Ezeagwu said, “Peter Obi is very much involved behind the scenes. He remains committed to the Labour Party and continues to advise the leadership on strategic moves. His absence today does not mean he is inactive. The former presidential candidate is focused on ensuring that the party is strong, united, and ready for the 2027 elections. Nigerians should know that Obi is still very much part of the Labour Party family, and he continues to support our vision and mission.”
Chief Tony Ezeagwu added, “Sincerely, there is no new update from Obi himself at this time. However, for those present at the forum who asked about him, Dati Ahmed clarified that Obi remains a member of the Labour Party. He said that in no distant time, Nigerians will see him. As far as we are concerned, our party is open to all members. If Obi comes, that’s good; if he does not, it is also fine. Remember, we suspended Alex Otti, but we never suspended Obi. He remains a legitimate member of the Labour Party, whether he participates now or joins in the future. The recent move by some to APC does not affect Obi’s membership.”
He continued, “You see, because of this problem, those who went to APC wouldn’t have gone there. They would have come to the Labour Party. But the crisis, which involved Nenadi, Abubakar Anko, and others, did not give the Labour Party the chance to grow as it should have. Now that the party is fully resolved and unified, we are confident that members will return, and the party can expand its influence across Nigeria.”
During the interview, another question was raised regarding accusations that Labour Party officials have been using a negotiative approach favoring only certain individuals. In response, Chief Tony Ezeagwu clarified, “Papa, Mama, and Pikin — the party is for everybody. Labour Party is a family, and it is a party that talks about human beings. As far as we are concerned, it is not about any single individual; it is about all members, their welfare, and giving everyone a fair chance to participate in the growth and leadership of the party.”
When asked by the host how satisfied the Labour Party is with the current administration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Chief Ezeagwu stated, “Labour Party is not part of the government, so our assessment is from the perspective of the people. We are monitoring, we are observing, and we will speak out where necessary. But our focus remains on strengthening our party and preparing for the 2027 elections.”
On the possibility of a coalition among opposition parties to challenge the ruling government, the South-South Chairman was firm: “Labour Party is not ready for any coalition at the moment. Our priority is to consolidate our structures, ensure our members are united, and make sure our party presents a credible alternative to Nigerians in 2027. Any talk of coalition now is premature.”
Chief Ezeagwu also addressed rumours that Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate in the previous election, contributed financially to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “That is completely false,” he said. “Peter Obi has never given money to the PDP. These claims are meant to mislead Nigerians and create confusion. The truth is that the Labour Party remains fully committed to its ideals and to its members across the country.”
The discussion further touched on the recent confirmation of Mr. Julius Abure as the authentic National Chairman of the Labour Party by INEC. Chief Ezeagwu described the decision as a major breakthrough, saying it “finally puts the party on a clear path toward 2027. Members can now operate without fear of internal disputes, and those who had left or were hesitant are now returning. The party is unified and ready to chart a new course for Nigeria’s political landscape.”
By the end of the interview, it was clear that the Labour Party leadership is focused on internal cohesion, public engagement, and strategic preparation for the next general elections. Chief Ezeagwu emphasized that with renewed confidence and unity, the party aims to offer Nigerians a credible and trustworthy alternative in 2027.
