CRU at 10: A New Era of Accountability as CSP A. O. Iniedu Assumes Leadership

As the Nigeria Police Force’s Complaint Response Unit (CRU) marks its 10th Anniversary on Friday, 21st November 2025, the Unit enters a renewed chapter, one defined by strengthened accountability, citizen-focused policing, and transformative leadership.

This year’s celebration arrives with significant good news: the appointment of Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Anietie Okokon Iniedu as the new Head of the CRU, an officer widely respected for his professionalism, operational competence, and longstanding commitment to police reform.

His appointment has been received across policing and civic communities as a reassuring development for an institution at the forefront of transparency and accountability in public safety.

Established in 2015, the CRU has served as the Nigeria Police Force’s direct interface with the public for reporting misconduct, improving trust, and strengthening service delivery. Over the past decade, the Unit has handled thousands of complaints across multiple channels—SMS, WhatsApp, social media, email, and its official website, becoming one of the most innovative citizen-police engagement platforms in Africa.

The CRU’s 10-year milestone is therefore not just an anniversary; it is a celebration of progress, resilience, and institutional reforms that have shaped a more responsive policing culture.

According to the Inspector-General of Police, CSP Iniedu’s appointment aligns with the Force’s broader vision for transparent policing.

His rich professional background includes:

  • Special Investigation Squad (SIS) training

  • Digital Surveillance & Open Source Intelligence

  • CRU Forensic/Crime Scene Management Course

  • Human Rights-Based & Gender-Sensitive Policing (UNODC, 2023)

  • Command Staff Course (INL, 2024)

  • Interviewing Skills Training (UNHCR, 2024)

These qualifications place him amongst a new generation of officers strategically positioned to drive reforms, elevate professional standards, and reinforce the credibility of the Nigeria Police Force.

CSP Iniedu has already outlined a three-pillar agenda:

  1. Deepening transparency

  2. Strengthening community relations

  3. Enhancing internal accountability

He has reaffirmed that under his leadership, the Unit will maintain fairness, impartiality, and a commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the police complaint-management process.

10th Anniversary Activities

The CRU will commemorate its decade of service with a Sensitization and Public Awareness Campaign scheduled for:

Date: Friday, 21st November 2025
Time:

  • 0700hrs – 0900hrs at Federal Secretariat

  • 0930hrs – 1100hrs at Diplomatic Drive / Garki Motor Park

The campaign will educate citizens on:

  • Their rights

  • Their responsibilities

  • Channels for reporting police-related complaints

  • The role of the CRU in ensuring accountability

For years, the CRU has depended on strategic partnerships with civil society, media platforms, and community groups. In tomorrow’s celebration, the Unit acknowledges the role of its partners, many of whom have amplified CRU’s work, supported awareness efforts, and helped bridge gaps between citizens and the police.

This anniversary represents both a reflection and a renewal:

  • A reflection on ten years of steady progress

  • And a renewal of the Police Force’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and service excellence

With CSP A. O. Iniedu at the helm, the Complaint Response Unit is not only stepping into its next decade, it is entering it stronger, more focused, and better equipped to serve Nigerians.
