Tobi Amusan gave Nigeria a reason to cheer on Sunday as she advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships taking place in Tokyo, Japan.
The 28-year-old sprinter looked composed and in control throughout her opening race, powering through the sixth heat to secure victory in 12.53 seconds. Her performance guaranteed her an automatic passage to the next stage of the competition. Devynne Charlton of the Bahamas trailed behind with a time of 12.69 seconds, while Italy’s Elena Carraro settled for third position after crossing the line in 12.86 seconds.
It wasn’t only Amusan who impressed on the day. Several high-profile names in the event also sailed through their qualifying rounds. Olympic champion Masai Russell of the United States eased into the semis, while reigning world titleholder Danielle Williams of Jamaica confirmed her status as a contender by advancing comfortably. Others who kept their hopes alive include Dutch hurdler Nadine Visser, Ackera Nugent, and Grace Stark. With such strong competition, the next stage promises to be a thrilling contest.
Amusan, who famously set the world record in this event back in 2022, will line up again on Tuesday when the semi-finals and the final are scheduled to take place. Fans will be eager to see if she can reproduce her trademark speed and reclaim the global crown she once held.
In other action involving Nigerian athletes, Sade Olatoye competed in the women’s hammer throw during the morning session of the second day. Despite her determination, her best attempt measured 68.82 metres—well short of the qualifying mark—leaving her out of the final round.
Nigeria will also have representatives in the men’s 100 metres later in the evening session. Sprinters Kanyisola Ajayi and Israel Okon are set to feature in the semi-finals, with the hope of making it through to the medal race scheduled for the same day. Their participation adds another layer of excitement for Nigerian supporters who are closely following the championship in Tokyo.
With Amusan leading the way and other athletes stepping onto the track and field, Nigeria’s presence at the World Championships continues to draw attention. The coming days may yet provide more moments of pride for the country on the global stage.
