Mike Brown, the ex-head coach of Nigeria’s men’s national basketball team, D’Tigers, has been named the new head coach of NBA side New York Knicks, according to The PUNCH. Brown takes on this high-profile position following his exit from the Sacramento Kings.
The 55-year-old American tactician has now become the 32nd person to manage the Knicks since the team’s inception. He signed a four-year contract reportedly valued at approximately $40 million. Brown was selected after the franchise carried out an extensive search, vetting several big-name coaches including Taylor Jenkins, Micah Nori, James Borrego, and even initiating discussions with college basketball icon Dawn Staley.
During his unveiling at the Knicks’ training base in Tarrytown, Brown confidently stated, “Nobody has bigger expectations, first of all, than I do. My expectations are high. This is the Knicks. I talked about Madison Square Garden being iconic. So, I’m looking forward to it.”
He continued, “Our goal is to build a sustainable winning culture that produces championships. That’s why I’m here. I’ve had great conversations with all of our players. I’m looking forward to growing positive strong relationships with all of them over time. Leon and I just started sitting down and talking about different ways to formulate a staff. That’s gonna be a process that’s ongoing. Who knows how long it will take.”
Brown brings with him a remarkable résumé. He’s a two-time NBA Coach of the Year—first earning the accolade with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2009, and most recently with the Kings in 2023. As part of the coaching staff, he’s also secured four NBA championship rings—once with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003, and three more while serving with the Golden State Warriors in 2017, 2018, and 2022.
With this appointment, the Knicks are clearly aiming to elevate themselves from playoff hopefuls to genuine title contenders, as they look to end their decades-long championship drought. The decision to bring in Brown comes after parting ways with Tom Thibodeau, who was dismissed following the team’s second-round playoff elimination at the hands of the Indiana Pacers in a 4-2 series.
