Italian football powerhouse Juventus has begun early negotiations with Nigerian international Wilfred Ndidi, as they consider a budget-friendly move for the Leicester City midfielder following the English club’s recent relegation.
According to Tuttosport, the Turin-based outfit has already taken initial steps in the UK to assess the financial landscape of a possible deal for the 28-year-old. Reports suggest that a release clause in Ndidi’s contract could allow him to be snapped up for around £9 million (approximately €10 million), making him a high-value target for the Italians.
“The name in question is Wilfred Ndidi, 28 years old, a defensive midfielder by profession. The Nigerian plays for Leicester and this is where the opportunity lies,” Tuttosport wrote.
“The club, which reached the top of English football in 2016 under Ranieri, was recently relegated. As a result, a clause in Ndidi’s contract, signed last summer and valid until 2027, has been activated. It allows him to be released for just over €10m.”
Ndidi, who has been a mainstay in Leicester’s midfield, has featured in 303 matches for the Foxes. Although he wasn’t part of their historic title-winning squad in 2016, he was instrumental in their later FA Cup and Community Shield victories.
Tuttosport also noted that Juventus could face stiff competition, as several clubs are circling. Manchester United, Crystal Palace, Everton, and Fulham are reportedly showing interest, while Real Betis in Spain and Saudi side Al Ahli have also entered the race.
Nonetheless, Juventus could hold a competitive advantage. Their return to Champions League football and global reputation might make them an irresistible option for the Nigerian midfielder.
“Tudor’s Juventus offer prestige, financial strength, and Champions League football. These are attractive factors for the Nigerian, who interestingly shares a hometown with Victor Osimhen,” Tuttosport added.
Ndidi has been identified as a possible alternative to Weston McKennie, whose contract renewal talks have reportedly hit a wall — raising the prospect of an exit.
The Nigerian began his European football journey with Genk in Belgium back in 2015 before joining Leicester in 2017. Despite signing a fresh three-year deal with the Foxes last July, the club’s relegation and the relatively low release clause have now opened the door to a potential departure.
Juventus, who recently landed Canadian striker Jonathan David on a free deal, are now weighing up another shrewd addition in Ndidi — a player once valued at more than €60 million.
