Veteran Nollywood actor, producer, and director Kayode Peters has reportedly passed away at his residence in Canada. While the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed, the news has deeply saddened fans and colleagues across the Nigerian entertainment industry.

Kayode Peters launched his screen career in campus theatre and quickly emerged as a creative force behind groundbreaking Nigerian content. He gained national recognition with the 2004 sitcom Flatmates, a beloved show that not only became a cultural phenomenon but also helped launch the careers of future stars like Basketmouth, Yaw, and Annie Macaulay‑Idibia . The show, originally produced independently, later found a new audience through a revival, My Flatmates, which was remade by M‑NET and earned renewed acclaim in recent years

In his own words, Peters described Flatmates as a turning point:

“Shooting ‘Flatmates’ became a big turning point in my career. It brought out so many big stars…”

Beyond sitcom success, Peters continued writing, directing, and producing projects that received critical acclaim some even earning international awards. Notably, his 2023 feature What No One Knows won at Cannes, and short films like Identical Justice and Crazy Grannies won prizes at festivals in Toronto and Texas

A graduate of the University of Lagos with a background in English and a former stage actor with Theatre 15 Peters honed his craft under mentors like Kunle Bamtefa . His early campus productions, including Twilight Zone, laid the foundation for his later independent ventures

Peters also ventured into international production with his film Excuse My African, shot in New York City in 2018, His commitment to championing fresh talent and delivering quality storytelling made him a respected industry mentor and a brand ambassador most notably for Declan Wine.

Industry peers and fans have taken to social media to mourn the loss of a creative visionary whose work shaped modern Nigerian television and film.

As Nigeria’s entertainment world reflects on his legacy, the enduring influence of Kayode Peters especially through the timeless appeal of Flatmates will continue to inspire generations of storytellers.
