Axxela, an oil and gas firm, is currently embroiled in a land dispute with the Emu-Ebendo Community in Delta State. The community is demanding that Axxela exit a portion of land allegedly acquired through another community, citing a 2003 Supreme Court judgment in their favor.
Axxela has responded by reaffirming its commitment to global best practices, legal processes, and sustainable development. The company claims that its acquisition of the land was legitimate and followed due process, involving extensive consultation with relevant family houses, engagement with authorities, and adherence to statutory procedures.
“Our attention has been drawn to a community dispute concerning land acquired for a planned gas processing plant in Umuseti, Delta State.
“As a responsible corporate organization, we wish to clarify the facts and reaffirm our commitment to global best practices that uphold legal processes, community interests, and sustainable development,” the statement issued by corporate communication manager, Omorala Shitu.
The dispute highlights the complexities of land ownership and acquisition in Nigeria, particularly in areas with significant oil and gas reserves. Axxela’s planned gas processing facility is seen as a strategic investment that will create jobs, boost local businesses, and enhance infrastructure development in the area.
However, the Emu-Ebendo Community remains adamant that the land belongs to them, and their protest demonstrates the need for companies to engage in meaningful dialogue with host communities to resolve disputes and ensure peaceful coexistence.
