President of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, has said the company’s N2.15 trillion public offering for Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals will broaden access to wealth creation by allowing more Nigerians and international investors to own shares in the major industrial project.
Dangote made the statement as the landmark Initial Public Offering (IPO) opened on the Nigerian Exchange, offering investors an opportunity to acquire a stake in the refinery. The offer comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at N525 each.
The public offer, which is expected to raise about N2.15 trillion if fully subscribed, has been positioned as a major step towards expanding retail participation in Nigeria’s capital market.
Dangote said the initiative was designed to give ordinary Nigerians an opportunity to participate in the ownership of one of Africa’s largest industrial investments.
The offer has attracted significant attention because of its scale and the size of the refinery, which is currently operating at about 700,000 barrels per day and has plans to expand its capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day.
The businessman said widening ownership would allow investors to participate in the refinery’s future growth and potentially benefit from its performance.
The public offer has a minimum subscription of 10 shares, meaning investors can enter the offer with N5,250 at the stated price. The structure is intended to make participation accessible to a broad range of investors, including retail subscribers.
The transaction is also expected to deepen activity on the Nigerian Exchange by bringing a major energy asset into wider public ownership.
Market observers have described the offer as a significant development for Nigeria’s capital market because of the refinery’s size, strategic importance and potential impact on investor participation.
The refinery, located in Lagos, commenced operations in 2024 and has become a major source of refined petroleum products for Nigeria and other markets.
Dangote has said the proceeds from the public offer will support the company’s expansion plans, including increasing refining capacity and developing additional industrial projects.
The company is targeting participation from millions of investors, with the offer designed to accommodate both institutional and retail investors. Reports indicate that the company hopes to attract up to 10 million Nigerian investors.
The development comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to deepen financial inclusion and encourage greater domestic participation in the capital market.
By opening part of the refinery’s ownership to the public, Dangote said the transaction would create an opportunity for Nigerians to become shareholders in a major domestic industrial asset rather than remaining only consumers of its products.
The IPO has also generated considerable interest among retail investors, with financial platforms reporting strong demand since the offer opened.
Analysts, however, have noted that the long-term impact of the transaction will depend on the refinery’s financial performance, dividend policy, expansion plans and broader market conditions.
For Dangote, the public offer represents more than a capital-raising exercise. It is being presented as an opportunity to broaden ownership of Nigerian industrial assets and encourage a stronger culture of investment among citizens.
The offer is scheduled to remain open until October 13, 2026, giving prospective investors time to consider the terms and participate through approved channels.
