The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Wema Bank, Moruf Oseni, has been appointed Chairman of the Consultative Committee for the 19th Annual Banking and Finance Conference of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).
The conference is scheduled to hold on September 8 and 9, 2026, in Abuja, bringing together policymakers, regulators, financial institutions, development partners, technology experts, academics and business leaders.
Themed “Building a Resilient Economy in an Era of Disruptions: Strategic Imperatives for the Banking and Financial Services Industry,” the conference will focus on strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s financial sector and improving its ability to withstand economic, technological and geopolitical disruptions.
Oseni, who is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, said the conference would go beyond conventional discussions by focusing on practical solutions and collaboration among stakeholders.
He explained that the programme would address some of the major challenges confronting the financial services industry, including technological disruption, cybersecurity threats, changing customer expectations and evolving regulatory requirements.
According to him, the conference will feature sessions dedicated to Nigeria’s financial system, women and inclusive leadership, as well as cybersecurity and systemic risks associated with artificial intelligence.
A women-focused programme will also be introduced as part of the conference activities, with discussions expected to examine the role of women in building a more inclusive and resilient economy.
The event will also include programmes targeting young professionals, entrepreneurs and students, with the aim of preparing the next generation of leaders for an increasingly digital financial sector.
Oseni said resolutions reached during the conference would be documented and presented to relevant policymakers and stakeholders to support decision-making and policy development.
The conference is expected to attract several prominent figures in Nigeria’s financial and economic sectors. Among those expected are President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele, and Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Olayemi Cardoso.
The CIBN conference is regarded as a major platform for discussions on the future of Nigeria’s banking and financial services industry.
CIBN President and Chairman of Council, Dr Dele Alabi, said the conference would help stakeholders develop strategies for building a more resilient, innovative and globally competitive financial sector.
Oseni’s appointment comes as Nigeria’s banking industry continues to adapt to rapid technological changes, evolving customer expectations and broader economic pressures.
The conference is therefore expected to provide an opportunity for industry leaders and policymakers to examine emerging risks while developing practical strategies for sustainable growth.
With Oseni leading the conference organising committee, attention will be focused on the quality of discussions and the recommendations that emerge from the two-day event.
