The Commissioner said the immediate priority of the Police Command was to ensure that the victims receive adequate medical attention and recover fully from the incident.
Following his interaction with the crowd, CP Nnanna visited the victims at the hospital to assess their condition and reassure them of the command’s commitment to their welfare. He also pledged to personally ensure that their medical expenses are covered.
The Police Commissioner subsequently ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident, particularly the circumstances that led to the discharge of a firearm.
According to him, the investigation is expected to establish the facts surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate course of action based on its findings. He stressed the importance of allowing the investigative process to proceed without interference.
CP Nnanna also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and peaceful, urging them to refrain from actions that could further escalate tensions around the area.
He assured residents and other stakeholders that the Police Command would handle the matter professionally and ensure that the circumstances surrounding the incident are properly established.
The development follows an incident at the Onitsha Head Bridge that attracted public attention and temporarily affected movement around the area.
The Police Command said the situation has since been de-escalated, with the free flow of vehicular and human movement restored around the Head Bridge.
The restoration of normal movement is expected to ease concerns among commuters, motorists, traders and other residents who use the busy route.
The command reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives and property while the investigation continues.
Members of the public were therefore encouraged to cooperate with the authorities and provide relevant information that could assist investigators in establishing what transpired.
The statement was signed by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, on behalf of the command in Awka on August 19, 2026.
