Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has secured victory in the August 15 governorship election after recording the highest number of votes across the state.
The State Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, announced the final outcome at about 7:24 a.m. on Sunday.
Adeleke, who contested under the Accord Party, secured 511,067 votes, defeating his closest rival, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
The governor won in 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji emerged victorious in 11.
Adeleke recorded victories in Ede North, Ede South, Ejigbo, Iwo, Egbedore, Ife North, Ife East, Ife Central, Oriade, Ifelodun, Orolu, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Odo Otin, Boluwaduro, Ilesa West, Ifedayo, Osogbo and another local government area.
Oyebamiji, meanwhile, won in Irewole, Isokan, Olorunda, Atakumosa East, Atakumosa West, Ilesa East, Boripe, Irepodun and Obokun, among others.
According to the Returning Officer, 1,010,684 voters were accredited for the election. The total valid votes stood at 985,079, while 20,721 votes were rejected, bringing the total number of votes cast to 1,005,800.
Other candidates recorded the following results: AA, 2,308; AAC, 1,458; ADC, 17,180; ADP, 2,946; APGA, 1,475; APM, 234; APP, 114; BP, 111; NNPP, 118; PRP, 83; SDP, 155; YPP, 534; and ZLP, 2,482.
After representatives of the participating political parties endorsed the collated results, Ogunwole formally declared Adeleke the winner and returned him elected for another term.
The ADC candidate, Najeem Salaam, finished third in the election.
