Blessing Agbebaku has resigned as Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly following moves by some members of the legislature to remove him from office.
Agbebaku’s resignation was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Ebojele, on Monday, August 17, amid growing tension within the state legislature.
The development came after a bloc of lawmakers reportedly began coordinating efforts to impeach the Speaker, with the push said to have gained momentum in recent days.
Rather than face a formal impeachment process, Agbebaku reportedly chose to step down from the leadership of the Assembly.
Confirming the development, Ebojele said the former Speaker had resigned from office but declined to provide details on the circumstances that led to his decision.
She, however, said a comprehensive explanation of the events surrounding Agbebaku’s resignation would be made public at the appropriate time.
Agbebaku became Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly after the inauguration of the 8th Assembly in 2023. His exit now creates a leadership vacancy in the state legislature, with lawmakers expected to determine his successor.
The resignation comes amid political manoeuvring within the Assembly and adds a new dimension to the unfolding political developments in Edo State.
