President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has applauded Team Nigeria for its outstanding display at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, describing the athletes’ achievements as a source of national pride and a reflection of the country’s sporting potential.

In a statement released after the competition, the President praised the athletes for their discipline, determination and resilience throughout the Games. He said their performances have inspired Nigerians and demonstrated what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

Tinubu also recognised the efforts of coaches, technical officials and support staff whose contributions helped prepare the athletes for the international competition. He noted that success in sports is the result of teamwork, proper planning and continuous investment.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the sector, the President promised to increase support for sports development by improving training facilities, promoting grassroots talent discovery and enhancing athletes’ welfare. He said sports remain an important avenue for youth empowerment, national unity and economic opportunities.

According to him, the government will continue to work with sports federations and other stakeholders to create an environment where Nigerian athletes can compete successfully at regional and international events.

The President added that the achievements recorded at the Commonwealth Games should motivate young Nigerians to pursue careers in sports while maintaining discipline and excellence in their chosen fields.

Sports analysts have described Nigeria’s performance as encouraging, noting that sustained funding, improved infrastructure and effective talent development programmes are necessary to maintain the country’s progress on the global stage.

Stakeholders have also urged the government to ensure that its commitment translates into practical support, including better training facilities, regular competitions and improved welfare for athletes.

Many observers believe Nigeria possesses abundant sporting talent capable of achieving greater success if given adequate opportunities and professional guidance.

Tinubu congratulated Team Nigeria once again and encouraged the athletes to remain focused as they prepare for future international competitions. He assured them that the Federal Government would continue to support initiatives aimed at strengthening sports development and raising Nigeria’s profile in global sporting events.
