Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is reportedly considering former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal as the Director-General of his presidential campaign organisation ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move is part of ongoing preparations by political parties and major contenders to strengthen their campaign structures before the official campaign period begins.
Sources within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) said Tambuwal has emerged as a leading choice for the strategic position due to his political experience, organisational ability and long-standing relationship with Atiku. Tambuwal previously played a key role in Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign when both politicians were members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The former Sokoto governor is regarded as one of Nigeria’s experienced political figures, having served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, two-term governor of Sokoto State and currently as a senator representing Sokoto South Senatorial District. His experience across legislative and executive positions is believed to be one of the factors influencing his consideration for the campaign role.
If appointed, Tambuwal is expected to work closely with other members of Atiku’s campaign team, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who has been linked with the former vice president’s political movement. The campaign structure is expected to coordinate nationwide mobilisation, strategy and communication ahead of the election.
However, party officials have stated that consultations are still ongoing and that no final decision has been made regarding the appointment. Some ADC stakeholders said discussions among party leaders would continue before an official announcement is made.
The development comes as other major political parties are also working on their campaign structures ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is reportedly considering possible candidates to lead President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign, while other opposition parties are also expected to announce their campaign leadership teams.
Political analysts believe the choice of campaign directors-general could play an important role in shaping the strategies of political parties ahead of the election. They noted that individuals appointed to such positions are often responsible for coordinating grassroots mobilisation, managing campaign operations and building alliances across different regions.
The growing political activity reflects the increasing preparations for the 2027 elections, with major political actors engaging in consultations, coalition discussions and internal planning. Analysts say the ability of parties to build strong campaign structures may influence their performance during the electoral contest.
Meanwhile, Nigerians are expected to closely follow further developments as presidential hopefuls continue to position themselves ahead of the election season. Observers have urged political parties to focus their campaigns on policies, governance, economic development and solutions to the challenges facing citizens.
While the reported consideration of Tambuwal signals a possible major role for the former governor, the final decision remains subject to approval by party leaders and the official announcement of campaign appointments.
