2027 Election: Okonkwo Raises Fresh Challenge Against Tinubu’s Candidacy

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kenneth Okonkwo, has called for the disqualification of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from contesting the 2027 presidential election, citing concerns over the administration’s performance and issues surrounding the electoral process.

Okonkwo, a lawyer and former spokesperson for the Labour Party presidential campaign council in the 2023 election, has continued to express strong views on the direction of Nigeria’s democracy and the need for credible electoral reforms ahead of the next general elections.

According to the opposition politician, President Tinubu should not be allowed to seek another term based on his assessment of the government’s policies and actions since assuming office. He argued that Nigerians deserve a political environment where leaders are held accountable for their decisions and performance in office.

The call comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with opposition groups and political leaders engaging in consultations aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Okonkwo has previously advocated for a strong opposition coalition, arguing that unity among opposition parties would be necessary to mount a serious challenge in the next presidential contest.

In previous comments, Okonkwo stated that no single opposition candidate could defeat President Tinubu without a broad political alliance. He maintained that opposition parties must work together and present a strong candidate capable of attracting support across different regions of the country.

The ADC chieftain has also raised concerns about electoral processes and the role of institutions ahead of the 2027 polls. He alleged that some government actions could affect the fairness of the election, calling for reforms that would strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.

However, supporters of the Tinubu administration have continued to defend the President’s record, highlighting ongoing government programmes and policies aimed at improving infrastructure, economic growth and national development. They have argued that the administration should be judged based on its achievements and not political criticisms.

Political analysts say Okonkwo’s remarks reflect the growing tension and competition expected ahead of the 2027 elections. They noted that questions surrounding leadership performance, economic policies, security and electoral credibility are likely to dominate political discussions as parties prepare for the polls.

The debate over eligibility and qualification of candidates remains a key part of Nigeria’s electoral process, with political parties expected to rely on constitutional provisions and electoral laws when presenting candidates. Any challenges to a candidate’s eligibility would ultimately be determined through established legal and electoral procedures.

As preparations for the 2027 election continue, opposition leaders are expected to intensify their campaigns and consultations, while the ruling party focuses on defending its mandate. Observers say the ability of political actors to present clear policies and credible alternatives will influence voters’ decisions.

Okonkwo’s latest statement adds to the increasing political conversations surrounding President Tinubu’s possible re-election bid and the strategies opposition groups are considering ahead of the next presidential contest.
