Former Plateau State Governor and elder statesman, Senator Jonah Jang, has credited former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) with shaping his public service career, describing the opportunity to serve under his administration as a turning point in his life. Jang made the remarks during the public presentation of his autobiography in Jos as part of activities marking his 80th birthday.
Speaking at the event, Jang recalled that Babangida entrusted him with the responsibility of serving as the Military Governor of the former Benue and Gongola states, despite the unexpected end of his military career. He said the confidence reposed in him by the former military leader gave him the platform to make meaningful contributions to national development and public service.
Jang expressed gratitude to Babangida for recognising his leadership potential and providing him with the opportunity to serve the country. According to him, the appointment significantly influenced his journey in public office and laid the foundation for his later political career, including his tenure as the civilian governor of Plateau State.
The former governor made the remarks while unveiling his autobiography, which chronicles his experiences from his days in the Nigerian Air Force through his years in public office. He explained that he decided to write the book to preserve an accurate account of his life, clarify misconceptions surrounding some of his decisions and provide lessons for future generations.
Jang noted that the autobiography was not written to attack anyone or settle political scores but to present his personal experiences as truthfully as possible. He said many assumptions had been made about his actions over the years and believed it was important to document events from his own perspective for the benefit of history.
He also acknowledged the contributions of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former President Goodluck Jonathan to his political journey. Jang thanked Obasanjo for supporting the actualisation of his electoral mandate in Plateau State and commended Jonathan for his administration’s support to the state through federal appointments, infrastructure interventions and security initiatives.
The event attracted several prominent dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang and other political leaders, who joined family members, friends and associates to celebrate the former governor’s milestone birthday.
Reflecting on his eight decades of life, Jang urged Nigerians, particularly younger generations, to focus on values such as integrity, faith and service to humanity. He observed that political office, wealth and public recognition are temporary, while character and commitment to serving others remain lasting legacies.
Political analysts described Jang’s remarks as a reflection on leadership, mentorship and public service. They noted that his comments underscore the role experienced leaders can play in nurturing future generations of public servants and preserving Nigeria’s democratic and historical records.
As Nigeria continues to reflect on the contributions of former public office holders, Jang’s autobiography is expected to add to ongoing discussions about the country’s political evolution, leadership experiences and the lessons that can guide future generations in public service.
