The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, has declared that President Bola Tinubu has already “defeated himself” ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that the administration’s handling of the economy, insecurity and governance has weakened public confidence in the government.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Adebayo said the Tinubu administration had failed to address the pressing concerns of many Nigerians and was merely counting down to the end of its current tenure. He maintained that the government had not fulfilled its primary responsibility of improving the welfare and security of citizens.
According to the SDP chieftain, worsening economic hardship, rising insecurity and increasing poverty have left many Nigerians dissatisfied with the direction of the country. He argued that these challenges have significantly affected public perception of the administration and could influence the outcome of the next general election.
Adebayo stressed that the 2027 presidential election should focus on policies and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges rather than political personalities. He said political leaders should present credible programmes capable of improving governance, creating jobs, strengthening security and restoring confidence in public institutions.
While expressing support for greater political cooperation among opposition groups, Adebayo said his priority remains building national unity instead of simply forming alliances aimed at defeating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He argued that lasting political change would only come through a shared commitment to national development rather than temporary political arrangements.
“Our focus should be on uniting Nigerians, not just uniting politicians,” he said, adding that meaningful reforms require broad public participation and a common vision for the country’s future.
The SDP presidential candidate also urged Nigerians to remain actively involved in the democratic process. He noted that the credibility of future elections would depend not only on political parties and candidates but also on the willingness of citizens to register, vote and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
Political analysts say Adebayo’s remarks reflect the growing political debate ahead of the 2027 elections, as opposition parties continue consultations and explore possible alliances while the ruling APC prepares to defend its mandate. They note that economic performance, security and governance are expected to dominate campaign discussions in the months leading up to the polls.
