Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Wednesday met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo amid growing public debate over the former leader’s political role ahead of the 2027 general election.
Photos of the meeting were shared on X by Obi’s campaign photographer, Esther Umoh. In a brief caption accompanying the images, she wrote: “Earlier today, the presidential candidate of the NDC, Peter Obi, met with former President Olusegun Obasanjo.”
The photographs showed Obi, dressed in a blue traditional outfit, walking alongside Obasanjo, who wore a white native attire and a blue patterned cap. A Catholic bishop was also seen with the two leaders during parts of the meeting, with some photos taken outdoors and others indoors.
As of the time of this report, neither Obi nor Obasanjo had disclosed the purpose or outcome of their discussions.
The meeting comes amid renewed speculation over Obasanjo’s political alignment and possible influence in the build-up to the 2027 presidential election.
Meanwhile, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to inaugurate the state’s 2027 Presidential and Governorship Campaign Council on Friday.
According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, the inauguration will take place at 3:30 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Governor’s Office, Ibadan.
The statement announced that the Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Nureni Adeniran, will serve as the Oyo State Coordinator of the 2027 Presidential Campaign and Director-General of the State Governorship Campaign Council.
Other appointments include Saheed Arowosaye, former Chairman of Oyo East Local Government, as Deputy State Coordinator for the Presidential Campaign; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Demola Ojo, as Deputy Director-General (South); Dr. Femi Ojo and Alhaji Siju Lawal as Deputy Directors-General for Oyo Central and Oyo North Senatorial Districts, respectively; Hon. Ramata Agberemi Dabo as Director of the Women’s Wing; and Hon. Kazeem Bolarinwa, former Special Assistant (Youth) to Governor Makinde, as Director of the Youth Wing.
The statement added that additional members of the campaign structure will be announced in due course.
