Obi’s Media Office Holds Federal Government Responsible Over Security Concerns Raised

The media office of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed concern over what it described as increasing threats against the politician, warning that the Federal Government should be held responsible if any harm comes to him.

In a statement issued by the media office, the organisation alleged that recent developments and public remarks by some political actors have contributed to a tense atmosphere surrounding Obi’s political activities. The statement called on relevant security agencies to ensure that the former Anambra State governor receives adequate protection while carrying out his lawful engagements across the country.

According to the media office, Obi has consistently exercised his constitutional rights by participating in public events, interacting with citizens and expressing his views on national issues. It argued that these activities should not expose him to intimidation, harassment or any form of security risk.

The statement further urged the Federal Government to demonstrate its commitment to protecting all Nigerians regardless of their political affiliation. It maintained that democracy thrives when political leaders and opposition figures are able to carry out their activities without fear of violence or persecution.

The media office also appealed to supporters of various political parties to avoid inflammatory statements capable of increasing political tension. It stressed that political disagreements should be resolved through lawful and peaceful means rather than hostility or threats.

While raising the alarm, the organisation did not present evidence of any specific planned attack against Obi but insisted that recent events justified its concerns. It therefore called on law enforcement agencies to remain vigilant and investigate any reports capable of threatening public safety.

As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Government had not issued an official response to the statement. Similarly, security agencies had yet to publicly comment on the concerns raised by Obi’s media office.

Political observers say statements relating to the security of prominent political figures often attract widespread public attention, particularly as discussions surrounding the 2027 general elections continue to gather momentum. Analysts have repeatedly emphasised the importance of ensuring a safe political environment where all participants can freely exercise their constitutional rights.

Civil society organisations have also continued to advocate for peaceful political engagement, urging leaders across party lines to promote tolerance, respect for differing opinions and adherence to the rule of law. They argue that reducing political tension is essential for strengthening democratic institutions and maintaining public confidence in the electoral process.

With political activities expected to intensify in the coming months, observers believe security agencies will face increasing responsibility to safeguard political leaders, public officials and citizens participating in democratic processes. They also stress that allegations relating to threats against any public figure should be treated seriously and investigated in accordance with the law.

The concerns raised by Obi’s media office have once again drawn attention to the broader conversation about political tolerance, freedom of expression and the responsibility of government to provide adequate security for all citizens. Whether the Federal Government responds directly to the statement or not, many Nigerians continue to call for peaceful political engagement as the country gradually moves toward another election cycle.
