Amaechi Emerges as Atiku’s Top Vice-Presidential Pick

Fresh details emerging from within the (ADC) African Democratic Congress indicate that the party’s presidential flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar, may be leaning toward former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as his preferred choice for the vice-presidential position ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources with knowledge of recent consultations disclosed that both politicians held a private meeting in Abuja where they discussed key political issues, including the party’s preparations for the next presidential contest and the ongoing search for a suitable running mate.

The talks reportedly took place against the backdrop of Atiku’s victory in the ADC presidential primary conducted in April, where he secured the party’s ticket ahead of Amaechi and fellow aspirant Mohammed Hayatu-Deen. Following the conclusion of the primary election, party leaders are said to have intensified discussions on how best to build a formidable national coalition capable of challenging rival political parties in 2027.

Individuals familiar with the internal deliberations revealed that considerable attention is now being directed toward identifying a vice-presidential candidate with the political influence, experience, and regional reach necessary to broaden the party’s support across different parts of the country.

Although no official announcement has been made, Amaechi is reportedly among the leading figures being considered for the position. Party stakeholders are believed to view his political background, national profile, and extensive experience in public service as qualities that could strengthen the ADC’s electoral prospects.

According to those briefed on the discussions, Amaechi used the Abuja meeting to present a number of concerns, proposals, and expectations which he considered important before making a final commitment. He reportedly assured Atiku that he would carefully review the issues discussed and communicate his decision after further reflection.

A source familiar with the meeting claimed that the former Minister of Transportation requested a short period to evaluate the situation before formally responding. The source added that Amaechi indicated he would provide feedback within two days regarding matters raised during the engagement.

Another account from individuals said to be aware of the discussions suggested that the meeting was conducted in a cordial atmosphere, with both leaders openly exchanging views on the future direction of the party and strategies for strengthening internal unity.

Amaechi was also quoted by insiders as expressing surprise at what he perceived as Atiku’s conciliatory approach during their interaction. The remark has since fueled speculation about the seriousness of ongoing efforts to foster cooperation among key figures within the ADC ahead of the next election cycle.

Political observers believe that securing Amaechi’s support could be an important step in enhancing party cohesion and presenting a stronger front in the run-up to the 2027 presidential race. His involvement, they argue, could help attract additional backing from various political blocs and influential stakeholders.

Despite widespread speculation surrounding the reported discussions, neither representatives of Atiku Abubakar nor officials of the African Democratic Congress have publicly verified the details of the meeting. Likewise, the party has yet to make any formal declaration regarding its eventual vice-presidential nominee, leaving room for continued consultations and political negotiations in the months ahead.
