Datti Baba-Ahmed Says Obi, Atiku Are ‘Office Seekers,

Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed has argued that Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar should not be regarded as opposition leaders, describing them instead as politicians focused on seeking elective office.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV on Thursday, Baba-Ahmed shared his views on the state of opposition politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While acknowledging his continued relationship with his former running mate, Peter Obi, Baba-Ahmed said he still respects him and hopes they can work together again in the future. However, he stressed that his criticism was directed at broader political realities rather than individual personalities.

According to him, genuine opposition goes beyond contesting elections and seeking political office. He argued that true opposition involves consistently holding the government accountable, challenging policies, and actively engaging with issues affecting citizens.

Baba-Ahmed maintained that opposition figures should have sustained the momentum generated after the 2023 elections by continuously addressing what he described as constitutional and governance concerns.

He suggested that many politicians are only visible when election periods approach, rather than maintaining a constant presence in efforts to scrutinise government actions and advocate for reforms.

His comments are likely to spark debate within opposition circles, particularly as political parties and key figures begin positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential race.
