Former England midfielder James Milner has officially called time on his football career, ending a remarkable journey that lasted more than 20 years at the highest level of English football.
The 40-year-old, who spent the last three seasons with Brighton & Hove Albion, departs the game following the expiration of his contract with the club.
Renowned for his adaptability, durability and professionalism, Milner leaves as one of the Premier League’s most respected figures. Earlier this year, he became the competition’s all-time appearance leader, further underlining his longevity in the game.
Milner’s career began at Leeds United before spells with Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton. Over the years, he featured in well over 600 Premier League matches and built a reputation as a dependable player capable of excelling in multiple positions.
His trophy-laden career included two Premier League titles with Manchester City. He later enjoyed further success at Liverpool, winning another league crown and helping the club secure the UEFA Champions League title in 2019.
Speaking in a retirement message posted on social media on Monday, Milner looked back on the highlights of his playing days.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country at two European Championships and two World Cups,” he said.
“But more than anything, it’s the people and friendships I’ve made throughout the game that I’ll cherish forever.”
On the international stage, Milner represented England at two FIFA World Cups and two UEFA European Championships. Throughout his career, he earned admiration for his commitment, leadership qualities and exceptional fitness levels.
His departure from the sport closes the chapter on one of the longest-serving and most consistent careers in Premier League history.
