Tension rose within the All Progressives Congress on Sunday as a number of sitting members of the House of Representatives who failed to secure return tickets in the party’s recent primaries openly rejected the results. Their reactions have raised concerns about a possible fresh wave of internal disputes within the party as it builds up toward the 2027 general elections.
Across several states such as Lagos, Rivers, Edo, Imo, Kwara, Benue, Ekiti, Plateau, and Cross River, the APC primary elections have remained highly controversial. Reports indicate that at least 26 incumbent lawmakers lost their bids for renomination, while others were either disqualified or withdrew under disputed circumstances involving allegations of manipulation, forced consensus choices, and imposition of preferred candidates by influential political actors.
The unfolding events have further exposed divisions among governors, party leaders, and political power brokers struggling for control over candidate selection. Many serving lawmakers who were affected have continued to express dissatisfaction with the process, deepening tensions inside the ruling party.
In Lagos State, outrage followed the discovery of an elderly woman’s body in a bush in the Badagry area. The deceased, identified as Victoria Adegoke and believed to be in her sixties, was reportedly found without clothing and is suspected to have been assaulted and killed before her body was dumped. The incident has caused alarm among residents and raised fresh concerns about safety in the community.
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde confirmed that seven teachers abducted during an attack on a school in the Oriire area are still being held by their captors. He noted that one teacher was killed during the assault, while security agencies have arrested several suspects connected to the incident. He assured that rescue operations are ongoing and that measures are being reinforced to protect schools and communities.
At the same time, the Labour Party is facing its own internal crisis as Governor Alex Otti and the recognised party leadership distanced themselves from the distribution of nomination forms by a faction loyal to Julius Abure. The party accused Abure of acting against court rulings and disregarding INEC’s position, while warning members not to accept any documents issued outside the official party secretariat for the 2027 elections.
