Former Zamfara Central senator Kabiru Marafa has left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking another party switch within a short period.
Marafa, who represented Zamfara Central in the Senate from 2011 to 2019, was received in Abuja by key NDC leaders, including former Bayelsa State governor and party leader Seriake Dickson, party chairman Moses Cleopas, and national women leader Dudu Manuga. He arrived with a group of his supporters.
His exit from the ADC comes just weeks after he joined the party on April 8, 2026, following his earlier departure from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in August 2025. This makes it his second defection in less than a year.
He explained that his decision was driven by concerns over ongoing legal disputes within the ADC, which he said created uncertainty about the party’s ability to prepare effectively for upcoming elections. With key electoral deadlines approaching, he stressed the importance of belonging to a stable and legally secure platform.
Marafa noted that prolonged court cases could disrupt party structures and leave aspirants without proper backing. He added that after consulting with his supporters and seeking legal advice, they concluded that moving to the NDC was the most practical option.
He also stated that he and his supporters would align with whatever decision the NDC makes regarding its presidential candidate.
Welcoming him, Seriake Dickson described Marafa’s defection as a major boost to the party, particularly in Zamfara State and the wider North-West region. He expressed confidence that Marafa’s experience would help strengthen the party and contribute to tackling issues such as insecurity.
Party chairman Moses Cleopas also emphasized the NDC’s focus on inclusivity, noting that the party is working to create opportunities for young people, women, and persons with disabilities as preparations for the next election cycle intensify.
