The faction of the Labour Party Nigeria led by Senator Nenadi Usman has announced the postponement of its ward, local government, and state congresses, as well as its national convention, which were originally scheduled to begin today.
According to the party’s earlier timetable, the ward congresses were to commence immediately, followed by local government congresses on March 28, state congresses on March 31, and the national convention on April 11. However, after a joint stakeholders’ meeting involving members of the interim National Working Committee (NWC) and representatives of labour unions, the party resolved to shift the entire process.
The decision, party leaders explained, was made to allow more time for members and prospective entrants to fully participate in the ongoing membership re-registration exercise. They emphasized that the extension would help ensure broader inclusion and strengthen the credibility of the process.
In addition to postponing the congresses and convention, the party has set up a 45-member committee to oversee the planning and coordination of the rescheduled activities. The committee is chaired by Ginger Onwusibe, who represents the Isiala Ngwa South/Isiala Ngwa North Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Other notable members of the committee include Salisu Mohammed, Obinna Aguocha, Amaobi Ogah, Ibe Okwara, Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, Alozie Munachim Ikechi, Benedict Etanabene, Emmanuel Emeruwa, Lawson Osagie, and Mrs. Imaobong Ufot, among others.
While inaugurating the committee, Senator Usman tasked its members with carrying out their responsibilities with diligence, fairness, and a strong sense of commitment. She urged them to make effective use of the additional time provided by the postponement to ensure that all arrangements are properly put in place for a smooth and credible exercise.
She further stressed the importance of transparency and inclusiveness in the process, noting that the success of the congresses and convention would depend on thorough preparation and the active participation of party members nationwide.
The party also appealed to its members, supporters, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for understanding regarding the adjustment. It reassured stakeholders that the postponement is aimed at strengthening internal processes rather than causing disruption.
According to the leadership, a new timetable for the congresses and national convention will be announced in due course. The party reiterated its commitment to conducting a credible, inclusive, and hitch-free exercise that reflects the will of its members and positions it effectively for future political engagements.
