- The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed claims that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is supporting the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking on behalf of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, described Wike as “an asset to Nigeria’s political space and development,” adding that any political party would be eager to have him as a member.
“The Honourable Minister of the FCT is an asset as far as the political space and development of this country are concerned. No political party would hesitate to have Nyesom Wike in its fold,” he said.
Addressing the rumours, Mohammed stated that the claims were designed to discredit both the PDP and Wike. He emphasized that it was not Wike’s fault that several PDP governors defected to the APC, noting that they acted based on their own reasons.
“I have consistently maintained that the FCT Minister has never, for a day, said he is a member of the APC,” he added.
Mohammed further stressed that Wike has neither attended APC functions nor declared membership in the party. He explained that, as a presidential appointee, Wike is focused solely on carrying out his official responsibilities.
“He has never attended APC functions. He is an appointee of the President and is simply discharging his duties as a public official and citizen,” he said.
He also urged Nigerians to remain patient as the PDP prepares for its primaries, assuring that the party will field candidates and continue to play its role as the leading opposition.
“We believe we will fulfill our responsibilities, field candidates, and maintain our position as a strong opposition party. I appeal to Nigerians to give us time as we approach our primaries,” Mohammed stated.
He concluded by dismissing the rumours of Wike’s alleged support for the APC as unfounded, expressing confidence that time would ultimately dispel the speculation.
“All these rumours suggesting that we are supporting the APC will fade. It is only a matter of time before the truth prevails,” he said.
