Roadside traders in Maraba, Nasarawa State, were on Thursday forced to vacate parts of the market as soldiers cleared areas affected by ongoing road construction.
The traders, who had displayed their goods along the roadside where rehabilitation work is taking place, were asked to leave immediately to allow construction activities to continue without obstruction. In the process, several items were scattered as many traders hurriedly tried to remove their goods from the road corridor.
The operation was carried out under the direct supervision of the Nigerian Army, with soldiers ensuring that the construction site remained free of trading activities. Heavy machinery and workers had already occupied the area, but some traders continued selling at the same spot.
The situation created tension in the market as affected traders struggled to secure their belongings and find safer locations to continue their business. Many expressed worry over losing their daily source of income due to the sudden enforcement.
Movement around the area was temporarily disrupted during the exercise, while construction work resumed after the roadside space was cleared, allowing the project to proceed smoothly.
