Islam Makhachev, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, has expressed confidence that British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua could excel in mixed martial arts if he chooses to make the switch from boxing.
Makhachev shared his thoughts during a recent interview, noting that Joshua’s athleticism, discipline, and striking ability could give him a strong foundation in MMA. According to the UFC star, elite boxers often possess qualities that can translate well into the octagon, especially when supported with proper training in grappling and wrestling.
Joshua, a former unified heavyweight boxing champion, is widely respected for his power, footwork, and professional approach to the sport. While he has not indicated any serious plans to join MMA, conversations about crossover fights between boxing and the UFC have grown in recent years, fueled by high-profile bouts involving fighters from both disciplines.
Makhachev emphasised that success in MMA requires more than striking alone, pointing out that fighters must master multiple skills, including takedowns, submissions, and defensive techniques. However, he believes Joshua has the mindset and physical tools to adapt if he commits to learning the sport.
The UFC champion added that fans would likely welcome such a move, as crossover athletes often bring excitement and new audiences to the sport. For now, Joshua remains focused on his boxing career, but Makhachev’s comments have sparked fresh debate about how top boxers might perform inside the UFC cage.
