Abia State Governor Alex Otti has emphatically declared that his 2027 re-election bid is unstoppable, pushing back against critics and political opponents, especially former Governor and current Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, whose comments he says are distractions from his administration’s developmental agenda. The governor made the comments during a church service on Saturday, underscoring his commitment to governance and distancing himself from premature politicking ahead of the general election.
Addressing worshippers at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Umuikaa District in Isialangwa South Local Government Area, Otti stated that his administration will not be swayed by noise or perceived political threats. “I am not bothered about 2027. The same God who settled 2023 will also settle 2027,” he told congregants, signalling his confidence in a second term. He insisted that no individual or group has the right to distract his government from its primary focus of delivering development to Abia people.
Otti’s comments come amid an escalating political tussle with Orji Uzor Kalu, a prominent figure in national and state politics. In recent months, Kalu has publicly indicated his intention to take control of Abia State for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections, pledging that his party will wrest power from the ruling Labour Party (LP) in the state.
Despite the public exchanges, Otti maintained that his administration’s focus remains squarely on governance and delivering tangible results for residents. During the service, he also took time to address some of the state’s ongoing infrastructure projects, apologising for dust and disruptions caused by road works but reaffirming that these efforts are part of broader initiatives to modernise and improve the state’s road networks.
Church leaders and grassroots supporters were present in large numbers to express solidarity with the governor. Members of the Alex Otti Vanguard Movement for Continuity 2027, including Dr. Fineboy Ikechi Joseph and Elders G.C. Ukaegbu and E.C. Alozie, praised the governor’s leadership, arguing that his accomplishments and vision for Abia State make his re-election inevitable. They expressed confidence that Otti’s policies are resonating with many residents, particularly in terms of stability, infrastructure development and economic initiatives.
The relationship between Otti and Kalu, once rooted in mutual respect and personal friendship, has deteriorated into a political rivalry. Recent weeks have seen a war of words between the two leaders, with Kalu’s pronouncements on political dominance generating strong reactions from Otti’s camp. Kalu’s sustained push for APC influence in Abia has been met with criticism from Otti, who has characterised such moves as distractions that could derail state progress.
Political analysts note that Abia’s political landscape is rapidly evolving, with key actors staking early claims and signalling their intentions for the 2027 electoral cycle. Beyond the personal dynamics between Otti and Kalu, broader party interests are at play, as the APC seeks to expand its influence in the oil-rich South East region traditionally dominated by other parties.
In addition to personal rivalries, Otti’s administration has been responding to what it views as premature politicking. Through his Special Adviser on Policies and Interventions, Rev. Fr. Christian Anokwuru, the state government has twice warned opposition figures against attempts to pit the governor against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and national political forces, arguing that such manoeuvres are designed to sow division rather than foster constructive governance.
Despite the ongoing political contention, Otti remains steadfast in his messaging that governance — not politicking — will define his term. His supporters argue that early declarations of re-election confidence are rooted in tangible achievements and broad satisfaction with his leadership. Critics, however, see them as premature and potentially divisive, given that meaningful public engagement on election issues is still some time away.
As the 2027 general election cycle unfolds, Abia State is likely to remain a focal point of political contestation, with Governor Otti positioning himself as a resilient leader undeterred by opposition rhetoric. Whether his claim of an “unstoppable” re-election bid will translate into electoral victory remains to be seen, but for now it underscores the rising heat of Nigeria’s next political season.
