As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, a senior chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Dr. Sunday Okoro, has endorsed Senator Orji Uzor Kalu as the most suitable candidate to represent Abia North in the National Assembly, emphasising the senator’s track record, experience and tangible contributions to the region.
In a statement personally signed and made available to the media, Okoro argued that discussions about representation in Abia North should be grounded on measurable performance, rather than narratives that overlook practical impact. He said that Senator Kalu, who currently represents the district in the Senate, has demonstrated consistent leadership and delivered projects and programmes that have improved lives across the senatorial zone.
Okoro highlighted that Senator Kalu has been widely accessible to constituents and proactive in addressing socioeconomic needs. “Throughout Abia North, Senator Kalu has consistently demonstrated dedication to infrastructure development, educational support, healthcare initiatives, youth empowerment and direct constituent engagement,” he said. Okoro noted that road rehabilitation, scholarship schemes, healthcare facility support and employment facilitation are among the concrete achievements attributed to Kalu’s interventions.
The APC chieftain further stressed that effective representation requires influence, experience and political capital — attributes he said Kalu possesses in abundance. By leveraging his seniority and networks within national decision-making circles, Kalu has helped ensure that Abia North remains visible and connected to federal resources and policy priorities. According to Okoro, these strengths are critical in a competitive political environment where marginalisation can hinder development.
Okoro pointed to Kalu’s inclusive leadership style, characterised by frequent interactions with community leaders, traditional institutions and ordinary citizens, as evidence of his deep understanding of the district’s needs. “He listens, intervenes and responds, often exceeding statutory expectations,” Okoro said, adding that such responsiveness builds trust and fosters meaningful engagement between elected officials and their constituents.
The APC chieftain urged communities in Abia North to rally behind Kalu as the election nears, saying continuity of quality representation remains vital for sustaining progress. He added that abandoning established experience for untested alternatives could jeopardise the district’s influence at the national level. “As 2027 nears, the question for Abia North should not be whether to abandon experience, but how to leverage it,” Okoro said.
Okoro’s endorsement underscores the political dynamics ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties positioning strong contenders in key senatorial districts. As campaigns gather steam, endorsements from party leaders and community figures are expected to shape electoral strategies and voter sentiments.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a former governor of Abia State and influential legislator, has remained vocal about his political loyalty and commitment to his party’s goals, including championing President Bola Tinubu’s policies at the national level. His combination of legislative experience and advocacy for development initiatives continues to attract support from some quarters of the APC and among constituents in Abia North.
With political activities intensifying across Nigeria’s states, the endorsement of established figures like Kalu highlights the importance of both performance records and grassroots engagement in the quest for electoral success. As the 2027 polls draw closer, stakeholders in Abia North and beyond are watching how established leaders and emerging contenders position themselves to appeal to voters and deliver on development priorities
