INEC Denies Releasing 2027 Election Timetable, Warns Against Fake Reports

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed reports claiming it has released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general election, calling such claims false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday by Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, the Commission clarified that it had not released any timetable or schedule for the 2027 polls, contrary to information circulating in some sections of the media and on social platforms.

INEC emphasized that it operates strictly within legal provisions governing elections in Nigeria. The Commission specifically referenced Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates the Commission to publish a notice of election not later than 360 days before the date appointed for a general election. According to the statement, any purported timetable or schedule issued outside this statutory framework cannot originate from the Commission.

The electoral body assured Nigerians that the official timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 General Election would be released in due course, and in full compliance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and the Electoral Act, 2022.

INEC further stated that when the timetable is eventually released, it would be communicated through the Commission’s official and verified channels. The Commission urged members of the public and the media to disregard the fake reports and rely only on information published via INEC’s official platforms for accurate updates.
