The Kwara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has accused former Senate President Bukola Saraki of political hypocrisy, alleging he publicly supports the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in the state while privately backing President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambitions in Abuja.
In a statement released Friday, APC spokesperson Abdulwaheed Babatunde described the alleged conduct as hypocrisy, disloyalty and double-dealing, demanding Saraki clarify the allegations. The party characterized any attempt to benefit from the ruling party while maintaining opposition politics elsewhere as “treacherous and unacceptable”.
The controversy erupted after Professor Abubakar Suleiman, Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, claimed during a radio programme that Saraki was collaborating with the APC at the federal level. Professor Suleiman, who previously worked closely with Saraki during the PDP era, recently declared himself an APC member.
The APC statement also referenced Saraki’s political history, noting his role in opposing a Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2015 and his controversial emergence as Senate President, which the party views as a pattern of betrayal.
However, PDP leaders in Kwara State have firmly rejected these allegations, with party officials describing Saraki as a committed leader of the PDP at both state and national levels. They clarified that Saraki’s support for Professor Suleiman’s appointment was done when Suleiman was still a PDP member and doesn’t indicate any party allegiance shift.
The accusations come as Saraki has been actively involved in reconciliation efforts within the PDP, which is facing a leadership crisis at the national level.
