Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has credited the late Stephen Keshi as the driving force behind Nigeria’s historic triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking on the legacy of the tournament, Onazi described Keshi as more than just a coach, saying his belief in the team and strong leadership gave the players confidence at a time when expectations were low. According to him, Keshi created a united squad built on discipline, trust, and hunger, qualities that defined the Super Eagles’ campaign in South Africa.
Onazi noted that Keshi’s decision to rely on home-based and relatively unknown players played a major role in the team’s success. He explained that the coach made every player feel important, encouraging them to give their best on the pitch without fear or pressure.
Reflecting on the final victory, the midfielder said Keshi’s calm approach and tactical understanding helped Nigeria stay focused throughout the competition. He added that the former national team captain constantly reminded the players of the pride and responsibility that came with wearing the green and white jersey.
Nigeria went on to lift the AFCON trophy for the third time in 2013, a feat Onazi believes remains one of Keshi’s greatest achievements. He concluded by saying the late coach’s impact on Nigerian football will always be remembered, not just for the silverware, but for restoring belief in the national team.
