The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State has reaffirmed Alhaji Bello Keegan as the legitimate state chairman of the party, following an emergency meeting held on December 10, 2025.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the party also announced the suspension of three senior officers: the State Secretary, Yusuf Alkali; the Assistant State Financial Secretary (Central Zone), Abba Galadima; and the State Publicity Secretary, Murtala Ali.
Their suspension followed findings that allegedly linked them to anti-party activities, breach of trust, and actions considered capable of undermining the integrity of the party.
The statement was jointly signed by 25 out of the 33 members of the State Executive Committee and endorsed by the Deputy State Chairman, Bello Illela, on behalf of the signatories. It explained that the vote of confidence on Keegan became necessary to preserve unity, organisational discipline and stability within the party.
According to the executive committee, Keegan’s reaffirmation demonstrates the party’s commitment to strengthening internal democracy and upholding its core values.
The committee further issued a warning to Umar Mohammed, directing him to stop parading himself as the state chairman of the ADC. It described his actions as “fraudulent, illegal, and intended to mislead the public.”
The ADC in Sokoto has recently been embroiled in a leadership tussle, with rival factions making competing claims to the chairmanship. The crisis is believed to have stemmed from alleged parallel meetings, conflicting directives, and attempts to establish a rival leadership structure.
These tensions prompted the state executive committee to convene Tuesday’s emergency meeting to resolve the leadership dispute, restore order, and prevent further division within the party.
