Several state Houses of Assembly across Nigeria have begun discussions on the establishment of state police, a move aimed at tackling escalating insecurity, kidnappings, and banditry that federal agencies have struggled to contain. Lawmakers argue that allowing states to create their own policing bodies would enable faster, more locally focused responses to crime and improve intelligence gathering in high-risk areas.
In Plateau State, which has experienced repeated violent attacks and mass abductions, the state House of Assembly confirmed its readiness to debate bills that would legalise state police. Lawmakers emphasized the urgency of action, highlighting that residents need immediate protection and more effective security measures than currently available.
Other states, including Sokoto, Borno, and Zamfara, have also indicated plans to explore state policing frameworks. Officials cited the success of community guards and local security initiatives as evidence that state-level forces could complement federal efforts, provided proper oversight and legal frameworks are in place.
The discussions follow calls by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the National Assembly to create enabling legislation for state police, stressing that Nigeria’s centralized policing system is overstretched and unable to provide adequate security for over 200 million people.
While proponents argue that state police would enhance security and protect lives, critics caution about potential political misuse, uneven enforcement, and accountability issues. Lawmakers have pledged to ensure safeguards are included to prevent abuse and protect citizens’ rights.
Observers say the outcome of these debates could mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s security architecture, with the potential to provide relief to millions of residents living under constant threat of violence. The coming months will determine whether these initiatives translate into functional state police forces or remain symbolic gestures.
