An early-morning fire on Friday, November 28, 2025, destroyed several shops at the Nkwo Enugu-Ukwu Market Square in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving traders devastated as they counted heavy losses. The fire, which reportedly started around 3:00 a.m., broke out when most shop owners were at home, giving the flames enough time to spread before help arrived.
According to the Anambra State Fire Service, officials received a distress call at 3:43 a.m. and immediately deployed firefighters to the scene. The response team arrived shortly after and battled the flames until they were able to contain the fire at about 4:46 a.m. Their swift intervention, they said, prevented what could have turned into a far wider disaster. However, while the fire service maintained that the damage was limited to one shop, traders at the scene insisted that several shops were affected, especially those dealing in provisions and roofing materials.
Eyewitnesses and shop owners said the losses were substantial. Many traders woke up to heartbreaking news that their shops and goods had been destroyed before they could take any action. One trader lamented that by the time people living near the market raised the alarm, the fire had already consumed valuable items worth hundreds of thousands of naira. Others described watching helplessly as years of investment went up in flames.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire may have been triggered by sparks caused by a sudden electrical surge after power was restored in the market. Traders said this was not the first time the market had experienced power fluctuations and warned that poor wiring and substandard electrical installations had long posed a threat to their shops. Many of them blamed the incident on negligence, stressing that such fires would continue if the government and market leaders failed to improve electrical safety.
The Anambra State Fire Service used the incident to renew its appeal to traders and residents to always ensure that electrical appliances are switched off when not in use and to carry out regular checks on their wiring systems. They warned that with the harmattan season approaching, the risk of fire outbreaks increases significantly, making safety precautions even more important.
This latest incident adds to the growing list of fire disasters recorded across Anambra State in less than one week. Recently, a petrol tanker exploded near the Ekwusigo Local Government secretariat, killing one person and destroying six shops. Another fire gutted a large factory in Nnewi, destroying equipment and materials. In Awka South, a section of a three-storey commercial building behind Juhel Pharmaceutical Company was also engulfed in flames, leaving traders stranded. The recurring pattern of fires has raised concerns among residents, who now worry about the possibility of systemic faults or inadequate fire-prevention measures across the state.
In the aftermath of the Enugu-Ukwu market fire, many affected traders said recovery may be difficult without external assistance. Some explained that the economic hardship in the country had already strained their ability to restock, and losing their goods at this time could completely cripple their businesses. They appealed to the state government, local authorities and well-meaning individuals to support them in rebuilding their shops and restoring their livelihoods.
Residents and business owners in the area are calling for the installation of better fire-safety equipment within the market, including fire extinguishers, functional water points and improved access routes for emergency vehicles. They also want regular inspections by government agencies to ensure compliance with safety standards and prevent avoidable disasters.
For now, the traders of Nkwo Enugu-Ukwu are left to pick up the pieces after another painful fire incident that has once again highlighted the urgent need for improved market infrastructure, stricter safety enforcement and stronger emergency preparedness in Anambra State.
