Amid the heightened political atmosphere in Anambra State, former governor and Labour Party Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has urged Governor Charles Soludo to embrace humility and compassion in his leadership. Speaking to journalists during an engagement with the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Abuja, Obi stressed that public office carries “a sacred responsibility to the people and to God.”
His remarks came in response to comments reportedly made by Soludo during his Certificate of Return ceremony, where the governor mocked his critics, described Obi as “a frustrated politician without a club,” and blamed him for issues affecting Anambra’s education sector.
Rather than react with hostility, Obi used the opportunity to underscore restraint, integrity, and the need to place service above politics. He also clarified his participation in the recent Anambra governorship election, stating that he attended only three public events to which he was invited.
“I did not endorse anyone, meet with traditional rulers, or engage in political manoeuvres. There was nothing I did to warrant controversy or speculation,” he said.
Reflecting on Election Day, Obi recounted witnessing irregularities and attempts by outsiders to interfere with voting in his community.
“When some individuals tried to cast votes where they shouldn’t, I urged calm and allowed the process to unfold peacefully. True leadership is measured not by political contests, but by courage, fairness, and respect for the dignity of the people even under pressure,” he stated.
Obi also touched on his record as governor, noting that he and Jim Nwobodo were among the youngest to assume governorship in the South-East. “I have no personal issue with Soludo. I pray God elevates him even more if it inspires humility, compassion, and genuine service to the people,” he added.
Okpala Congratulates Soludo on Re-Election
Meanwhile, the aspiring traditional ruler of Isulo in Orumba South Local Government Area, Dr. Meshack Okpala, has congratulated Governor Soludo on his re-election.
Okpala, a Professor of Decision Sciences, praised the governor during a virtual world press briefing over the weekend, saying Soludo had significantly transformed Anambra State in his first term.
Commending the governor for achieving the goals he set, Okpala described Soludo’s accomplishments as inspiring and reflective of his commitment to the welfare and progress of the people.
