Ikorodu City have surged to the top of the Nigeria Premier Football League table for the first time this season after securing a 2–1 triumph over Plateau United on Sunday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
The first half offered little excitement, but the Lagos outfit took control immediately after the restart. Joseph Arumala opened the scoring in the 47th minute with a well-placed header from a set piece delivered by Folarin Temitope.
Their lead grew moments later when substitute Alade Balogun found the net in the 54th minute, placing the home side firmly in charge. Plateau United later halved the deficit through Wisdom Ndon, but their late push wasn’t enough to rescue a point.
Ikorodu City’s climb is fueled by an impressive run of form — four victories in their last five games — and the faltering results of their closest competitors. Nasarawa United dropped points after being held to a 1–1 draw by Kun Khalifat FC in Owerri, while Bayelsa United handed Abia Warriors a 2–1 defeat in Yenagoa.
Rivers United also made significant progress on the standings, moving into second place after a comeback 2–1 victory over Warri Wolves in Port Harcourt. The visitors struck first through Adebambo Ademola in the 25th minute, but Emmanuel Nnaji restored parity five minutes later.
Samson Obi later completed the turnaround in the 58th minute, condemning Wolves to back-to-back league losses.
Meanwhile, uncertainty has intensified around Enyimba manager Stanley Eguma following his team’s fourth loss of the campaign — a disappointing home defeat to Wikki Tourists. Earlier in the month, Eguma had been issued a two-match warning by the club hierarchy. He responded with a win against Kano Pillars and a draw with Abia Warriors, but the latest setback has left his job under serious threat.
At the bottom end of the table, nothing changed. Bendel Insurance and Kun Khalifat sit on 12 points each, Barau FC follow with 10 points, and Kano Pillars remain last with six points.
