PDP BoT Insists Ibadan Convention Will Hold Despite Internal Crisis

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has affirmed that the party’s national convention scheduled for Saturday in Ibadan will proceed as planned.

BoT Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, stated this on Thursday in Abuja while receiving the report of the PDP Reconciliation Committee.

Despite internal disagreements and ongoing court cases affecting the party’s leadership, Wabara said all major organs of the PDP have already agreed that the convention must go ahead.

The committee, chaired by Hassan Adamu, was inaugurated on November 5 to address lingering issues and ensure a smooth, credible national convention.

Speaking to journalists after receiving the report, Wabara reiterated that the convention remains on course.
“You know the Governors’ Forum, the National Working Committee (NWC), and the BoT have all agreed that the convention should hold,” he said.

He added that only a court ruling could alter the plan.
“But if for any reason the court decides otherwise, we are a law-abiding party. We rely on the Supreme Court’s judgment, which should guide lower courts. As far as the organs of the party are concerned, the convention will hold—unless the courts stop us,” he said.

“There is no crisis”—Wabara

Responding to suggestions that the BoT’s intervention was coming late, Wabara dismissed fears of escalating tension.
“There is actually no crisis,” he said, describing the party’s challenges as “self-inflicted” and driven by personal political ambitions. According to him, some actors are already thinking about the 2031 elections and trying to destabilise the party for future advantage.

Wabara also revealed that the BoT became active after the 2023 elections but lacked the necessary funding.
“I’m not contesting for anything. Whatever decisions the board takes under my watch will be to keep the party alive,” he assured.

Committee Submits Findings

Presenting the committee’s report, Chairman Hassan Adamu described the assignment as difficult but thanked the BoT for the confidence reposed in the team.
“We have gone round and spoken to various segments of our party, including leaders and the Governors’ Forum. We have now come up with recommendations to ensure a hitch-free convention,” he said.

Committee Secretary, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, provided details of the consultations held during the week-long exercise. He said the team met with key stakeholders, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, the Umar Damagum-led NWC, the PDP Governors’ Forum, and other party leaders.

He added that the committee also met with the suspended National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, alongside the National Organising Secretary and the National Legal Adviser.
“They explained their positions, and we had useful engagements with them,” he said.

The committee further consulted former Senate President Bukola Saraki, among others, before finalizing its recommendations.

Oghiadomhe said the committee’s proposals reflect a balanced assessment of all issues, with the goal of ensuring a stable, forward-looking PDP.
