The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta North has declared its full support for the creation of Anioma State, which is proposed to become the sixth state in Nigeria’s Southeast geopolitical zone.
In a formal submission to the Senate Subcommittee on State Creation, the party’s Delta North leadership affirmed that Anioma is “ready for statehood.”
The letter, signed by APC Delta North Chairman, Chief Adizue Eluaka, stated that the people of the zone are united in their demand.
“For us, this is long overdue. The APC Delta North Senatorial District is fully and unequivocally in support of the creation of Anioma State,” Eluaka wrote.
He described the quest for Anioma State as not merely a political aspiration but a matter of fairness, equity, and strategic importance to Nigeria’s federation.
Chief Eluaka noted that there is no division among Delta North leaders on the issue, emphasizing that the agitation aligns with justice and the historical identity of the Anioma people.
“We call upon the Distinguished Senate to act in solidarity with the legacy of Chief Dennis Osadebey and other patriots of Anioma who championed this noble cause,” he said, while commending Senator Ned Nwoko for spearheading the renewed push in the National Assembly.
Eluaka observed that the Southeast remains the only region in the country with five states, describing the imbalance as unjust and calling for its correction through the creation of Anioma State.
“The agitation for an additional state for the Southeast actually began with Senator Nwoko’s bill,” he noted.
Recalling the hardship endured by Anioma communities during the civil war, the APC chieftain said the creation of Anioma State would serve as a step toward healing and restoring the people’s sense of belonging.
“The creation of Anioma State presents a chance for healing, affirmation, and restoration of pride in us as a people,” he said.
Eluaka affirmed that Anioma has the population, resources, and administrative structures required to function effectively as a state. He added that its creation would enhance the Southeast’s political influence and economic strength while promoting balance in national representation.
“By creating Anioma as the sixth state of the Southeast, Nigeria will strengthen the zone’s political participation, stability, and national representation,” he said.
He appealed to the Senate and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support the proposal, describing it as a nation-building initiative that would foster unity and deepen democratic inclusion.
“The creation of Anioma State will stand as both an act of justice and a reaffirmation of the Senate’s responsiveness to the aspirations of the Nigerian people,” he added.
Meanwhile, calls for restructuring and the creation of additional states have continued to gain traction across the country, as lawmakers from various regions push for new states to correct perceived geopolitical imbalances.
