The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Headquarters Logistics Command has announced plans to temporarily shut sections of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Road, Lagos, on Saturday, October 18, 2025, to allow for its routine 10-kilometre Walk/Jog Exercise.
According to a statement signed by the Command Public Relations Officer, Squadron Leader Abigail Ologun, the exercise will commence at 6:00 a.m. and conclude by 8:00 a.m. It forms part of the Air Force’s ongoing efforts to enhance physical fitness, discipline, and operational readiness among its personnel.
The statement explained that the exercise, which will cover the route between Murtala Muhammed Airport 2 (MMA2) and the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, will necessitate temporary restrictions on vehicular movement along the affected sections. Consequently, motorists and residents in the area are advised to make use of alternative routes during the two-hour period.
“The Command has made adequate arrangements to ensure the exercise is conducted smoothly, safely, and without incident,” the statement read. “NAF personnel, alongside other security operatives, will be deployed along the route to manage traffic and ensure the safety of both participants and the general public.”
Squadron Leader Ologun noted that the exercise is part of a wider programme by the Air Force to promote a culture of health and physical alertness among officers and airmen, stressing that fitness remains a cornerstone of military preparedness.
“Physical conditioning is a critical part of military life. This walk/jog exercise is designed to strengthen teamwork, build endurance, and reinforce the importance of wellness in sustaining operational efficiency,” she added.
The Command further assured that adequate security and medical arrangements have been put in place to manage emergencies and facilitate a safe environment throughout the duration of the exercise.
While acknowledging that the temporary road closure may cause some inconvenience to commuters and businesses operating within the airport vicinity, the Air Force appealed for public understanding and cooperation.
“NAF remains committed to maintaining cordial relations with host communities and stakeholders. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this temporary closure may cause and wish to assure members of the public that normal traffic flow will be restored immediately after the exercise,” the statement concluded.
Observers note that the Nigerian Air Force has, in recent years, intensified its focus on wellness programmes and physical drills for its personnel, recognising that a fit force is essential for national defence and rapid response operations. Routine exercises such as the Lagos Jog not only boost morale among officers but also promote community engagement and public awareness about the institution’s commitment to professionalism and discipline.
The upcoming exercise, according to insiders, will also feature participation from other security agencies and partner organisations, reflecting the collaborative spirit among Nigeria’s defence institutions.
As Lagosians prepare for the temporary disruption, officials have urged all road users to plan their movements ahead of time and obey traffic directives from security operatives on duty.
With safety measures in place, the Nigerian Air Force believes the Saturday exercise will be both successful and impactful, reinforcing the institution’s readiness to serve with strength, discipline, and unity.
