The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has assured members and supporters that its structures remain strong and united despite the resignation of Governor Douye Diri from the party.

Governor Diri, who chaired the PDP’s zoning committee that allocated the party’s 2023 presidential ticket to the South, formally announced his resignation on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, during an expanded State Executive Council meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa, ending weeks of speculation about his planned defection.

In his announcement, Diri said the decision followed “extensive consultations” with key political stakeholders across the state. He further revealed that the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and several members of the State House of Assembly were joining him in resigning from the party.

Following his exit, the Bayelsa State PDP convened an emergency meeting in Yenagoa, during which the party leadership formally accepted Diri’s resignation “with utmost respect,” emphasizing that the move would not affect the strength or unity of the party in the state.

In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ebiye Agu Ogoli, the PDP expressed appreciation for Governor Diri’s contributions and cordial relationship with party stakeholders during his time in the PDP.

“The Bayelsa State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has formally received and accepted the resignation of Governor Douye Diri. While we respect his decision, we reaffirm our total commitment to the PDP’s ideals, vision, and objectives,” the statement read in part.

Ogoli stressed that all party organs and structures at the ward, local government, and state levels remain solid and cohesive. He added that the party remains focused on delivering good governance and sustaining its dominance in the state’s political landscape.

The statement concluded by extending the PDP’s best wishes to Governor Diri in his future endeavors.

The emergency meeting was attended by key members of the State Working Committee, including Chairman Hon. Solomon Agwana, Deputy Chairman Hon. Ben George Odon, State Secretary Hon. Gesiye Isowo, State Treasurer Elder Luke Demeoru, Organizing Secretary Hon. Indutimi Opurubelebo, Woman Leader Hon. Christie Ebbeli, Legal Adviser Barr. Christopher Kainga, and several others.
