Govs’ Defection to APC Part of Plot for One-Party State — ADC Alleges

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the recent defections of governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), warning that it is part of a calculated move by President Bola Tinubu to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC claimed that the defections of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State to the APC validate its longstanding warning that President Tinubu and the ruling party are actively undermining Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

“The recent defections by the governors of Enugu and Bayelsa states to the ruling APC validates the African Democratic Congress’ (ADC) long-standing warning that President Bola Tinubu is determined to turn Nigeria into a one-party state, no matter the cost to democracy or national stability,” the statement said.

The ADC accused the defecting governors of betraying their people, stating that instead of standing with Nigerians in difficult times, they chose to join the “gang-up against the Nigerian people.”

“While it may seem like the APC has added more governors to its column, in reality, what has happened is these governors have actually abandoned their people to team up with the ruling party that has made life miserable for the majority,” the party said.

It added that the 2027 general elections would be a defining contest, not just between political parties, but between ordinary Nigerians and the elite class it claims has hijacked governance for personal gain.

The ADC further accused the APC-led administration of failing across all key sectors — insecurity, economic management, healthcare, social welfare, and foreign policy.

“Nigerians can see the current state of the nation. They live through the APC’s failures every single day. Even those who once campaigned for the APC or had its logo on their social media profiles now avoid association with the party,” the party said.

According to the ADC, Nigerians are bearing the brunt of poor leadership through rising food prices, lack of job opportunities, and worsening insecurity in all regions.

Calling for a renewed opposition effort, the ADC stated that the people must rally to challenge the ruling party in 2027, asserting that “the line has now been drawn.”

“This is what Nigerians expected from these governors in opposition. Instead, they abdicated. And in an act of historic political apostasy, they chose to join the grand conspiracy against the Nigerian people,” the party said.

“The people can see, and they are waiting. 2027 will be a clear battle between the people of Nigeria and President Tinubu and his gang of governors in the APC.”
