The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has postponed its much-anticipated 103rd National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, originally scheduled to hold today (Wednesday), citing recent developments within the party.
In a statement released by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP said the decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) held on Monday. The postponement, the statement added, was made in accordance with Section 29(2)(b) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
“A new date for the NEC meeting will be communicated in due course,” the statement read.
The move comes at a time of increasing concern within the PDP following the defection of several key members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The defections have raised questions about the party’s cohesion and electoral readiness ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite the internal challenges, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has urged party members to remain optimistic. Speaking in Abuja during the inauguration of the PDP National Convention Transportation Subcommittee, Makinde described the current difficulties as part of a necessary process toward rebuilding.
“The news out there is that governors are defecting. I have good news. It may appear that it’s getting worse. But usually, when you want something that will endure, it will usually get worse before it gets better,” Makinde said.
He reminded members of the PDP’s longstanding role in Nigeria’s political landscape since 1999, stressing that the party has remained a major force either as the ruling party or as the main opposition since 2015.
As the PDP navigates through this turbulent period, all eyes are on its leadership and next steps in regaining stability and unity ahead of future elections.
